How Ground Shipping Rates Stack Up

Last week, I mentioned in my FedEx post that I was anxious to try some shipping quotes with FedEx Ground rates included. Well, I got the chance this week!

I had a plate for sale in my eBay store that was priced at $9 for shipping (USPS Parcel Post). A customer emailed me, thinking the $9 I quoted to ship in the listing was way to high for a $12 plate, and they asked for a better quote. Since they lived so far away from me, I knew my $9 quote was pretty close, but was happy to give it a shot.

Here's what I found for a 3 lb box going from Texas to New Jersey:

-$8.65 FedEx Ground
-$8.85 USPS Parcel Post (quoted in eBay listing)
- $9.51 UPS Ground
- $9.90 USPS Priority (not Ground shipping, but I threw it in for comparison)

Yup, FedEx Ground was the cheapest. It was $.20 cheaper than Parcel Post, which runs real slow, and $.86 cheaper than UPS Ground! So, I e-mailed back the customer, they bought the plate (selecting FedEx Ground), and I got to open a FedEx shipping account. It was super easy, taking less than 5 minutes. Plus, I should get a 8% discount since I paid for the label through my account at home.

In this case, I learned something new, and made an eBay sale at the same time! Oh, and in case you are wondering, the plate was a Christmas plate, purchased 2 days after Christmas!

The Mom Central & FedEx Wrap Party

Last Tuesday I had the honor of attending a "Wrap Party" hosted by Mom Central at the FedEx Office & Print Center in Dallas. This was my very first mommy blogger social/PR event, and who knew bloggy events could be so much fun? I can't wait to attend another!

We started off by learning a bit about FedEx as a company. They did indeed get their start in sending documents across the country overnight as Federal Express, but there's so much more to it these days. They shortened their name to FedEx, acquired Kinkos a few years ago, and have now become FedEx Office!

One of the Wrap Party activities was to wrap a gift and send it to a friend or family member as a bit of a holiday surprise. I decided on sending some chocolate covered pretzels to my Aunt Mary. She lost her husband a few months ago, and was top on my list for holiday cheer. Before we started, FedEx sent in a packing expert to give us packing tips. I'll admit I ship a lot with eBay, and even I learned a few things!

Here's a few packing & shipping tips:

- Wrap items with bubble wrap 1-4 times depending on how fragile they are.
- Use the right sized box, but still allow for about 2 in. of packing all the way around.
- Newspaper and plastic bags make great packing.
- Tape in a "H" pattern, down the middle and secure the outside edges as well (basically tape all seams)
- Fill boxes up full with packing so it doesn't collapse under the weight of other boxes in transit (stacked on truck or plane)
- Use the extra 4-digit part of the zip code for faster delivery
- Place an extra address card inside the box, just in case

Now, even though FedEx does allow you to use your own materials, they also have everything you would ever need to ship right in the store. Boxes and bubble wrap do cost a little, so look around the house first. Also, if packing and shipping really stresses you out, FedEx can pack it for you. They can even make a custom box for odd shaped items. And, they mentioned at the Wrap Party that if a packing expert packs and ships your stuff for you, it's insured. Certainly something to think about with fragile items or if you're a frazzled parent of little ones. The few extra bucks will be worth the piece of mind.

A few other exciting things I learned:

- FedEx ships worldwide, 365 days a year (so there's still time to ship for Christmas, today is the LAST day to ship).
- They DO NOT ship to APO addresses.
- FedEx Ground usually runs cheaper than UPS (awesome news for me....I'll be checking that out very soon).
- If you set up a FedEx account online you'll save about 16%, and it's so easy to use!

After we were done munching on snacks and packing up our boxes, we took a look around the store. Since I'm a bit of an office supply freak, I was in heaven! It's really a one stop shop for home or business needs. For instance, in addition to downloading pictures for printing photos to pick-up, did you know you can send documents from home (or work) to FedEx Office to print for you? For instance if you prepared a document at home but needed 1000 copies or wanted it printed on pink paper, FedEx is your place. My husband used this feature a lot at his previous job. It saved him money and time!

So, back to my package for my aunt. I got it ready to go, and it was already on the truck and on the way before I even got home. Tracking the box was easy online. I could "see" it leave Dallas and go through Memphis (FedEx home) and head on to Missouri. Since my box was shipped FedEx Express (not FedEx Ground), my aunt was munching chocolate covered pretzels with 24 hours of the Wrap Party. Impressive!

Lastly, we learned about the new FexEx blog called Out Of Office. Cute name, huh? It's a spot to find "Unexpected ideas for creative projects". Even though the blog is pretty new, there are already some great ideas being tossed around on the site.

I had such a great time last week thanks to Mom Central and FedEx. I even got to meet Stacy DeBroff CEO of Mom Central! I enjoyed learning new things, sharing a little holiday joy and meeting some very cool Dallas area bloggers. Thank you everyone for a great time!

I wrote this review after attending an event on behalf of FedEx. I received a holiday food item and complimentary FedEx shipping for it to facilitate my candid review. Mom Central sent me note cards and a store credit to thank me for taking the time to participate.

My CVS Trip The Week of 12/13-12/19 - $3.27 OOP

I actually went to CVS first thing Sunday morning, and have been busy ever since. Sorry for the super slow post!

Trip #1

2 Packs of Bows $5.98
2 Packs of Labels $3.98
2 Packs of Tissue Paper $3.98
3 Suaves $6.00
2 Revlon Nail Colors (B1G1 Free) $4.99
Starch $2.29
Olay Body Wash $7.49
Olay Quench Body Lotion $9.99

minus

$.75/2 Suave Body Wash newspaper coupon
(2) $2.00 off Revlon
B1G1 Free Body Lotion P&G coupon (the computer would only take off $7.49 not $9.99)
$6.00 in ECB from last month's trip
$5/30 CVS coupon (quiz about Medicare Part D)

Total Cash OOP = 23.23 and I got back $15.94 back in ECB

Trip #2

Olay Body Wash $7.49
Olay Quench Body Lotion $9.99

minus

B1G1 Free Olay Lotion P&G coupon (again, only $7.49 taken off)
$9.96 in ECB from trip #1

Total OOP = $.02

So, I've spent a total of $23.25 in cash out of pocket but I'll submit the Olay Quench rebate for $19.98 back. You can request up to 2 rebates, as long as they are submitted together! So, it pays to read your rebate before shopping! Anyway, that will leave me with a grand total of $3.27 in cash spent and a total of $68.03 saved. Also, I ended up with $5.98 in ECB, and that's just a $.02 loss. All in all, an awesome week for me at CVS!

Homemade Christmas Gifts In A Jar For About $2 Each

Yesterday my kids and I made our teacher gifts, aren't they cute? We decided on the Hearty Soup Mix in a jar from the Mason jar gift idea e-book that I told you about in my previous post. I had a few of the ingredients at the house and "borrowed" some jars, lids and rings from my mom. I told her they weren't coming back. Anyway, overall I spent $10.65 on supplies and made 5 jars, that just $2.13 a jar. I have a bit of everything except some split peas leftover, so we can make a batch of soup here at home too.

We cut Christmas cards in half (to make them post card style) and taped the soup directions on the back. This is a great way to recycle old cards. Although for this craft my daughter picked out a pack of 8 new cards from the $1 bin at Target. It was super frugal and she has 3 left over. We also found lots of ribbon and cool ornaments in our Christmas supply stock. I save everything! So, attached to each jar was the directions (on a cute card), an ornament, and a gift card.

Other ideas are attaching a wooden spoon, a cute dish towel, a pack of recipe cards, etc. to the jar. Also, you can use cute holiday fabric on the top, between the lid and the ring. My kids just added bows (free from CVS), since I forgot to "borrow" holiday fabric from mom. All in all, this was an awesome idea for holiday gifts since the kids were able to do a lot of it. The whole thing means so much more to both the giver and the recipient when the kids worked on it themselves!!

What items are you hand crafting this year? I'd love to hear about them!!

eBay Has Half Price On Auction Style Insertion Fees Today & Tomorrow

Today and tomorrow eBay if offering 50% off insertion fees on auction style listings (1, 3 or 5 day only). This is a great way to attract more holiday buyers and I'm not sure about you, but I could really use some eBay sales right now.

Here's the official eBay scoop:

"December 8-9, 2009, sellers who list 1, 3, or 5 day Auction-style item(s), and have a 12 month Detailed Seller Rating of 4.5 or higher on all criteria, will receive 50% off the standard Insertion Fee per item listed. New sellers who don't yet have DSR ratings are also eligible. DSR rating criteria for this promotion will be based on the previous 12 months. To see your DSR ratings, go to your Seller Dashboard within My eBay. For more information on DSRs, click here."

Promo ends Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 11:59 PM plus 59 seconds ET.

Here's a bit of my own advice....when doing an auction style listing this close to Christmas, be sure to add the "buy it now" feature as well. For example, start the auction at $9.99 or they could "buy it now" for $17.99.

Happy Selling!!

Mama’s Holiday Wish List Meme - Wylie Mom

TodaysMama and Provo Craft are giving away a sleighful of gifts this holiday season and to enter I’m sharing this meme with you.

1. What 5 items are on your holiday wish list this year? This one is tough since I don't make wish lists for myself, but here goes! There's a really cute plum (purple) wool coat I love at Old Navy, a gift card for a pedi or eye brow wax, an iTunes gift card (maybe I'd actually use it if it has music on it), cash to pay bills and a successful blog/eBay store in 2010 (okay, that can't be bought....but it's still a wish!).

2. What is your favorite handmade gift you have received? I still have some really cute hangers I was given 20 years ago.

3. What handmade gift have you always wanted to tackle? I hate sewing, but keep thinking I want to make a quilt.

4. What was the best Christmas gift you received as a child? Hmm....nothing really stands out. I guess I really liked my Snow White sleeping bag. I still have it!

5. What items are on your kid’s wish list this year? Imaginext Dragon Fortress, FurReal Kitty, Disney movies, anything Transformers, Spiderman car from Target, Baby Alive (that potties), skates, cute pink boots from Target, new batons...

6. What is your favorite holiday food? Fudge, although I never actually make it.

7. What will you be hand-crafting for the holidays? I just finished a fake plate of cookies for a prop for my daughter's twirling routine. Does that count? I'd considered making peppermint bath salts...

8. What is your favorite holiday movie? Christmas Vacation and Elf.

9. Favorite holiday song? Elvis' Blue Christmas, although I'm that person who could listen to Christmas music year round. I love it!

10. Favorite holiday pastime? Drinking cocoa! Silly I know, but I love drinking it at home by the fire, in coffee shops, at the mall watching shoppers, etc...

Thanks to Brandy Ellen at Happily Blended for tagging me in this meme/giveaway! I'm tagging:

Changes Coming Soon To The Pampers Gifts To Grow Program

Pampers Gifts To Grow is the online program where you enter your points from Pampers packages. Although, I have no diaper wearers here at home anymore, I'm still a member. I had points left over last year and I keep accumulating more points (here and there) online. Anyway, later this month they are making some improvement to the program. Here's what's in store:

- Simpler points: your Gifts to Grow points will change to 10X their current value (if you had 12 points, they'll automatically convert to 120). This is to make redeeming points easier—no more left over fractions of a point, and all your points have a redeemable value. Learn more.
- More rewards: you've earned the points, and now we're giving you more choices on how to use them.
- Faster ways to earn rewards: new ways to earn points to get you closer to your rewards.
- New bonus point opportunities—look for offers that are just for you when you log in to Gifts to Grow.
- Your codes are still good—enter them now (even those with an expired date).

Have you redeemed your Gifts to Grow points for anything super fab? Tell me! Also, be sure to check out the link below for Pampers coupons!!

Amazon Toys Shoppers Keep An Eye Out For This Refund

Santa and I are about done shopping for the kids, all the "big" stuff at least. About half of it "we" purchased at Amazon.Com. Which was a GREAT experience by the way. I got free shipping on everything, and it all arrived the next day! I'm still waiting on all the Toys R Us stuff...! Anyway, yesterday I get even more good news from Amazon via e-mail.

"Thanks to the recent purchase(s) you made in the Toys Store at Amazon.com, you are eligible to receive a 1-year subscription to Parenting School Years or Parenting Early Years (a $9.97 value) included with your purchase."

Be sure to read the fine print, if you choose not to take the magazine, you can mail in this form with proof of your Amazon Toy purchase (confirmation e-mail) and you will receive a $9.97 refund. Yay, for fine print!

I have no idea what triggered the refund, but I ordered a FurReal LuLu Kitty (it's $25 more expensive now....Santa is so smart to shop early), Imaginext Dragon Fortress and a Bumblebee Plasma Cannon.

Be sure to share holiday deals, coupons, rebates, etc. you find by leaving a comment. Thank you!

Super Cheap Firewood Near Wylie, Parker, Allen & Murphy Texas

Hey there local readers, anyone live close to Southfork Ranch and need firewood?

Condren Tree Service has a GREAT deal on firewood. It's $40 (plus tax) a pick-up load. You have to stack/load it yourself, so bring gloves. And, you can only fill up the bed, level to "the top". So, you might need to load neatly.....but it's only $40! Sure beats those $20/stack stands that are popping up all over town. We guess it's about a 1/2 cord of wood with a pick up full. You can still load up your SUV or car trunk if that's all you have.

Condren Tree Service is located on Parker Road in Allen (technically) and is about 1/2 mile west of Southfork Ranch, on the north side of the road. I like to think that's it's "eco-friendly" too. Since it's a tree service and all, they are selling the wood from trees they've trimmed or removed.

This was an edited repost from last year, but Condren's is selling firewood again! Yippee!! We picked up a load last week and have been enjoying fires ever since.
