What's Going On With Wylie Mom

What's going on with me? Does anyone really wonder? Well, I'll tell you anyway.

Mainly, I'm trying to adjust to being a "school" mom. I was pretty lazy all summer, since it was my daughter's last summer before starting school. I mainly just blogged and played with the kids. But once fall got here, it truly was time to get my life in order.

Late in the summer I gave the Wylie Mom website a make-over. And I have been somewhat adjusting the content since then as well. I'm trying to post useful coupons, freebies and deals and also have been adding a lot more about selling eBay. Speaking of eBay, I am now a Power Seller and a Top Rated Seller!! I'm very excited about both, especially the Power Seller part. It's something I've been working very hard at for a couple of years. Anyway, I have been continuing to tweek to look of my website, so if you subscribe with a reader, check it out http://www.wyliemom.com/. I quit doing the weekly wrap-ups, they got boring for me. But I calculate that I make/save about $20K staying home. I really hope to increase that number in 2010. Also, I've been posting less pictures on my store deals. They too, got kinda boring, and I've been shopping less, and living off the stockpile I have made for myself.

My big adjustment lately has been making a new schedule. Mainly learning what tasks I can fit in where, around my kid's schedules. I'm running around so much with grade school, preschool, and activities for 2 kids, that as crazy as it sounds, I have to schedule my time to blog, eBay, clip coupons, drug/grocery shop, etc. And there's the housework, family time, etc.. Also one of my daughter's activities is private dance lessons. So, with that goes helping her practice in between classes (she LOVES the class, so it's totally worth it, I just never thought of myself as a "show mom"). I do manage to sleep very well, but my "me time" is lacking. Hmm...sounds like a new goal.

Anyway, it's seems strange but after almost 2 years as a SAHM/WAHM I'm still trying to adjust to it. It seems hard to convince myself I had a productive day when I didn't do anything to make money. I know that caring for my family is way more important and valuable (and I'm blessed the the chance to do it 24/7), but it's still a nagging feeling at the end many of my day's. Anyway, I'm grateful I've been given the opportunity to do what I love and I have best hubby in the world for help making it happen.

How about you, what have you been working on this fall?

Boo On Ballard In Wylie Texas Re-Scheduled For Friday

Due to the chance of rain today (Thursday), Boo On Ballard has been re-scheduled for tomorrow. It will now be on Friday, October 30th from 6-8 pm in downtown Wylie, Texas. It's a free event perfect for the whole family!

So, looks like we'll do our pumpkin carving tonight. First, I'll have to go grab some pumpkins. I went to Kroger a couple of days ago (awesome trip....spent $45 and saved $85 with lots of free food!) and forgot to grab them. Anyway, I'll have the kids pick a pumpkin carving stencil from the big list I posted. Last year, I carved Cinderella's castle and hubby did a cute Jack-o-Lantern face. We also have a "Mr. Potato Head" Halloween set that the kids worked on. Check out our cute Halloween 2008 handy work here. :)

Now that Halloween is almost here, what are you doing to make the holiday fun?

I ran into CVS yesterday to grab a few things (for FREE) before the last $5 in ECB from a trip a month ago expired. They expired today, so I cut it pretty close. I have heard rumors of CVS's taking expired ECB and I have had an expired CVS coupon accepted once, but I don't want to push my luck!

What To Sell On eBay - Sweet Pickles Books

A few weeks ago I posted an eBay success story about selling kids snow bibs. Something I am new at. Anyway, I asked for readers to share recent eBay success stories and Amy at Frugally Frugalicious left a great comment!!

She invested $2 in some books and sold them for $80. Holy cow!! I had to know more!!

Amy remembered reading some cute books she enjoyed as a kid and wanted to find them for her daughter. Recently while browsing in a thrift store she ran across about 20 of the books (Yay Amy!!). Check out this current Sweet Pickles books eBay auction to see what I'm talking about (not Amy's auction!). Anyway, they were priced at $.50 each but when she asks the salesperson, she tells her she will sell them to her for $.10 each! Amy kept a few for herself and sold the rest for $80. Way to go!!! That's an amazing price for vintage (1970's), used books. Not to mention she sold just a few random ones, and not the complete set of 40.

Here's the Wikipedia scoop: "Sweet Pickles is a series of 40 children's books by Ruth Lerner Perle, Jacquelyn Reinach, and Richard Hefter (who also created Stickybear and the Strawberry Library). The books are set in the fictional town of Sweet Pickles and are about anthropomorphic animals with different personalities and behavior. There are 26 animals—one for each letter of the alphabet. The books were published in 1977 and went out of print in the mid-1990s. The series' name is a pun; in each book, the main character gets into a "pickle" (a difficult situation) because of an all-too human personality trait. The front endpapers of the books portrayed the 26 characters, and the back endpapers portrayed a map of the town."

So, check out the current auction that I linked to. Remember what they look like and remember Sweet Pickles!!

Thanks so much Amy for writing me back and giving me all the scoop. I really appreciate it!! :)

Also, thanks to the Collectors Connection for the picture.

Wylie Mom Is Featured On AmericanTowns Website

This was fun, easy and free! I ran across a cool web site called AmericanTowns. It's a "virtual town square, plugging you in to the information and resources related to your city, town and neighborhood". Also, each community can post it's own local events, news and announcements, press releases, take donations, create a web site and more. All while being visually appealing and remaining informative!

Since Wylie is kind of small, I'm the only blogger currently featured. Check me out on Wylie's AmericanTowns here. Just scroll down a bit....blogs are at the bottom.

I'd advice checking out AmericanTowns for your area, and if you have a blog, be sure to submit it to be featured!!

Family Fall Activites In Wylie, Texas - October 2009

Here's a few fun family activities that are coming up here in Wylie.

October 23rd, 2009 (this Friday) is the Dodd Elementary PTA Fall Carnival. It's from 6-9 pm and adults and kids 2 and under are FREE. Children 3 and over will need a wristband for face painting and to play games, but they are only $7 each OR $5 with 2 canned goods. There will also be "carnival" food, bounce houses, a dunking booth, a petting zoo, costume contests and a pie throw...awesome fall fun for the whole family. Be sure to check out the silent auctions in the library! And, there will also be a canned food drive. Dodd is located at 1500 Park Blvd. in Wylie.

**UPDATE** October 23rd and 24th, 2009 is the The Wylie Chamber of Commerce's 17th Annual Wylie Championship Rodeo has been CANCELED!!!!! Again, due to the rainy weather. It has been one wet fall in the DFW are, that's for sure!

October 29, 2009 is the annual Boo On Ballard . Yay, my favorite event!! This is a trick-or-treating event hosted by the Wylie Downtown Merchants Association. This is a FREE event, and perfect for the whole family. We've been for the past 4 or 5 years and always have a great time. There's also a costume contest, the fire department is usually there...good times!! It's from 6-8 and I'd advise getting there early, like right at 6. It gets crowded pretty quick but you'll score lots of candy, toothbrushes, pencils and magnets that are great for crafts!

Have anything for me to add? Send me an e-mail at wyliemom@live.com.

One Year Subscription to Bridal Guide Magazine For Free

Yup, that's right!! Get 12 FREE issues of Bridal Guide magazine from ValueMags.Com.

Also available, 3 free issues of Field & Stream magazine.

I request all the free magazines I can get. Here's why: I can usually flip through one magazine a night. It's so fun to look at all the pretty glossy ads....! Anyway, I'm looking for articles to read (then or flag for later), coupons, interesting sweepstakes, etc.

Once I'm done, the magazine goes to the donate/sell pile. Sometimes I donate them to the library. Depending on your personal situation, this might be tax deductible. So, be sure to ask for a receipt just in case. Other times (most times, hehe) when I feel like getting a little cash for my wallet, I sell them to Half Price Books. Last month's pile was worth $10!! When selling them, it seems you get more $$ for more currents issues. Therefore, I'd advise going about once a month.

Want more freebies? Click here for my most recent freebie posts. Don't want to miss another free magazine (like Oprah, M.S. Living, Vogue, Marie Claire, Field & Stream, Car & Driver, Good Housekeeping, my list goes on and on and on...!) subscription? Subscribe to Wylie Mom via e-mail. I always post all the freebies I personally request.

Have a great day!

I Made A $.42 Profit Buying Milk & More At CVS

I finally made it into CVS this week!!

2 Boxes Cereal $5.00
Milk $2.49
Glade Candle $6.99

minus

$1.00 off Cheerios coupon from the sample I got here
$1.00 off Cin. Toast Crunch coupon
$3.00 Glade coupon (All You maybe?)
$8.00 ECB from this trip
$.50 ECB from Summer spending

Total OOP = $1.07 and I got back $9.99 in ECB.

I still had another $5 in ECB from last week, but didn't find anything to "roll" the bucks with so I settled for $1 out of pocket. I made a small Extra Care Buck profit of $1.49 ($9.99 made minus $8.50 used) combined with the $1.07 in cash spent and I "made" $.42 buying the milk I needed. On the other hand, I did not need any more cereal. But, I went ahead and got it since the Girls Scouts are "trick or treating" tonight for canned goods and toiletries. I have a huge bag of ready for them (cereal, pop-tarts, razors, deodorant, mac-n-cheese...). Plus ther was a profit that I couldn't pass up. :)

Now, I have $5 in ECB from last months trip that still need to be spent (ASAP), and the $9.99 from this trip.

*** DEAL ALERT!! Little Swimmers packs are on the clearance rack for $2.25. It's a great time to stock up for spring!!

Fall Is Here, Time To Get Out the Crock Pot!

Fall is by far my favorite season! I love the crisp air, the approaching holidays, and the fact that it's once again hot cocoa and sweater weather. It's also the perfect time to get out the crock pot and make cooking easy again. Since I hate to cook and love easy, I wanted to share these very easy slow cooker recipes.

Slow Cooker Pot Roast - 4 ingredients plus 8 hours in a slow cooker!

Slow Cooker Turkey Breast - 3 ingredients plus 8 hours in a slow cooker!

I have actually posted the turkey recipe before, it's what I made for Thanksgiving Dinner last year. It was SO easy and VERY moist...yummy!!

Both recipes & the picture are from All Recipes.

Top 10 Thrift Store / Garage Sale Items To Hunt For & Sell On eBay

I've always loved going to thrift stores and garage sales. For me, there's such a trill in the hunt. Come on, what's not exciting about finding a $400 Waterford Crystal figurine for 99 cents? Yes, that actually happened to me, I found it at Goodwill. But the thing is, it was a golf figurine and I don't golf or need more stuff in my tiny house even though it was Waterford and all. So, I turn to eBay and sell these fabulous finds and then enjoy the same exciting rush when I make money selling it.

Here's my top 10 list of things to keep an eye out for, in random order:

1. 1980's VINTAGE SHEETS - Look for cool cartoon or TV/movie characters from the 80's like Star Wars, Dukes of Hazzard, Smurfs, Cabbage Patch Kids, etc. I once sold a twin set of Dukes of Hazzard sheets for almost $90 and all the buyer wanted was the pillowcase!

2. NWT CLOTHES- Clothes that still have the mfg. and or store hang tags. Usually easy to spot. Good sellers are women's plus sizes, men's big & tall, kids/infant clothes. Ladies clothes are more difficult to sell on eBay, unless they are designer.

3. STARBUCKS MUGS- I love selling mugs in general, but I always get a little rush when I pick up a Starbucks mug. Most mugs sell for $10, but some Starbucks mugs can sometimes bring in $40 or so.

4. MENS TOMMY BAHAMA SHIRTS- We're talking the silk button up variety, excellent condition only. Big and tall sizes are a bonus!

5. HOLIDAY STUFF- New, boxed or excellent condition ornaments, candy dishes, figurines, mugs, china, tableware, outdoor flags, etc. Infant and kids dressy wear, Christmas sweaters. I usually start the Christmas selling season about January 10th, seriously!! People shop for nice Christmas items year round. I paid 45 cents for a new Lenox China Santa cup last October, and it sold for $15 two weeks after Christmas. But, don't overlook Halloween costumes, Thanksgiving & Easter stuff, etc.

6. HALLMARK ITEMS- Mugs, candy dishes, Keepsake ornaments, figurine, etc.

7. POTTERY BARN ITEMS- Any dishes, holiday stuff, excellent condition or new in package bedding, wall decor, toys, nursery decor, etc.

8. SPORTS WEAR/GEAR- Remember condition is VERY important! Some successful items for me have been; GK leotards, Under Armour pants (to be worn by a baseball player under their uniform..? I have no clue but they sold for $25!), Champion snow bibs, Nike cleats, etc.

9. SPORTS TEAM STUFF- College level or professional, both do well! Look for mugs, etched glasses and steins, jackets, wind pants, infant rompers and onesies, cheerleader costumes, etc.

10. EXPENSIVE STUFF- expensive stuff that's priced cheap. For example, I found a seriously ugly sweater (Coogi) with the Neimans (my clue to the expensive part) tag still on it for $3 and I sold it for $120. In this case, I actually knew about the Coogi brand, but you get the idea.

Just remember condition and price are very important. Get "new" and excellent condition items only. I normally don't pay more than $1 or $2 an item and also follow my $10 rule. I look for items that I can sell for at least $10 ($9.97 really) or that I can make at least $10 on it. Happy Selling!

Enjoy A Night At The Theather For Free

Freebies isn't all about toothpaste and shampoo. It seems no one can say no to the freebie bandwagon, and now the fine arts have jumped on board! Yay!

Theatre Communications Group, a national organization for America's not-for-profit professional theatres, is hosting the 5th "Free Night Of Theater". It kicks off nationally on October 15th, 2009. Over 120 cities are participating coast to coast. Plus, some cites are offering a free night at the theater all month. You could maybe go tonight!

"Whether you've never been to the theatre before, or just haven't been in a long time, our Free Night theatres have something for you!"

Check out the Free Night of Theater homepage for more details in your area. For the Dallas list, click here. Here in Dallas there are lots of very cool shows still available. For example, Junie B Jones, Harvey, Sleepy Hollow-The Musical, Rabbit Hole, Harvey (in Garland), etc...

This would be a wonderful opportunity to take your kids to the theater for the first time. That's sort of the idea behind the whole thing, to let someone who's never experienced the theater before, have a chance. Or, a great date night idea...no one has to know it was free!

A New eHow Article-How To Open An eBay Store

A few days ago I posted an eBay success story about selling kids snow bibs on eBay. I had a few comments (yay!!) and one was an anonoymous reader who asked, "How do you make an eBay store?". So, I answered that question over at eHow. I've also added the article to my selling advice and resource page.

Making Money on eBay Selling Kids Snow Bibs

If you follow me Twitter, you might have read this morning where I was getting an eBay purchase ready to ship and decided to blog about it. Kind of a "success story" if you will. :)

Last spring I purchased 3 kids snow bibs (overalls) at a thrift shop for $2 each. I placed them all in my eBay store at the time. Remember spring selling on eBay is all about Easter, not snow!

First up , a pair of Barbi snow bibs in excellent condition (looked like a Walmart brand & was missing the matching jacket) sold about 4 or 5 months ago for $13.97. I shipped those to Canada, so the timing of the purchase makes more sense.

Today, I sold and shipped a pair of Columbia snow bibs. They were navy blue, in excellent condition, and sold for $27.97. Plus, I still have a pair of kids Obermeyer's left in my store at $17.97. ***Update*** The Obermeyer pair sold on October 25th, just 3 weeks after this post. :)

Looking at all 3 pairs, once the 3rd pair sells, that will end up being about $60 in gross sales. With only spending $6 for the snow bibs, my inventory only cost me 10%. I only pay a little to PayPal and eBay after that, but once it's all said and done it's about 25-30% in inventory and fees and 70-75% profit. Impressive business model overall, I'd say! And $60 is certainly not bad off of a $6 investment. I have no knowledge of cold weather wear, I've never even been skiing. I took a small chance (as far as my experience on the items) and it is paying off. As usual, I think the key to success on eBay is listing items in a "store" and being very patient. Once you have a few hundred items listed, you should be selling something every day or so.

Have an eBay success story? I'd love to hear it! :)

Best Practices When Replying To Online Offers

I'm assuming that since you're reading this, you have replied to some sort of online offer at some point in your life. Requesting samples, printing coupons, online surveys, online shopping, gaming, etc. Do any of these sound like you? If so, here are a few suggestions to keeping your email box neat and tidy and keeping spam to a minimum in your personal email box.

First off, set up a new free email account. I would suggest a different domain than your current personal email account. Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo are a few ideas. Use your name and the email account purpose in the name. For example: suzysavesmoney @ domain.com or gamerbob@ domain.com. Keep it short and easy to remember.

Once your new account is set up, start a few file folders. For example a reader of this blog might want folders that say:

Coupons/Freebies
Shopping
Surveys
Panels
Emails to Read (for MyPoints, InboxDollars and RewardPort)

Keep it simple at first, you can always fine tune it later as the emails start coming in. Once emails come in, depending on how much time you have, respond or file for later. Here are some options for responding:

Move to spam
Unsubscribe & delete
Print offer & delete
Reply/Participate in offer & delete

Be sure to clean out your folders every month or so. For example, I might file all my BzzAgent e-mails, but delete them once the campaign is over. Once offers start hitting your personal email box, be sure to update your personal info with the sender. You'll want those offers to go to the new mail box. This method works really well for me. Once I have a few minutes (say at nap time), most of my make/save money offers are in one spot. It also keeps emails in my personal email box to a minimum so I'm not missing an important email from the school or accidentally deleting something from a friend.

Save $10 On Walt Disney's Snow White With A Printable Coupon

Walt Disney's is re-releasing Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in a Diamond Edition on October 6th. Make this a really sweet deal, by saving $10 with a printable coupon. I'm so excited, we're still watching it on VHS! My daughter loves Snow White (of course) but my son likes the Dwarfs. It's the perfect family movie for our household.

Coupon details:

1. Log into Disney Rewards

2. Type in a UPC from an older DVD or VHS copy of Snow White. You'll type this in at "Enter Code", where you usually type in the rewards code.

3. Print the $10 coupon!!

Coupon available for printing until October 19th and the coupon will be only be vaild October 6th through October 20th. Be sure to look for sales and you'll score Snow White for under $10!!

I think I'll go to Best Buy since hubby received a $5 GC and $5 in Best Buy Rewards. I might score it for freeeeeeeee (imagine Adam Sandler asking for the Ferrai in Bedtime Stories).

Walmart has it priced at $19.96 as of this post (Target $24.99). That would only be $9.96 after the $10 coupon. If you see a great deal or price on Snow White, let me know! I'll add it to the post and give you credit. Thanks for reading!! :)

NEW ADDED BONUS!!!! Here's a $5 rebate to do as well.....purchase Snow White and selected Hefty products for another $5 back. Looks like Snow White will very frugal friendly!

Snow White / Hefty Rebate Form

ADDED BONUS #2!!!! There's another $5 rebate from Kernal Season's right here.

Also, Thanks Jeri for pointing out it's only the Blue-ray (or Blue-ray/DVD combo) version of Snow White that's out right now!!
